AETCOM sessions by Physiology Department for 1st MBBS students of 2021-2022 Batch held on 20th and 21st september 2022.
AETCOM Module 1.2 – What it means to be a patient? and AETCOM Module 1.3 – The doctor – patient relationship was conducted for 1st MBBS 2021 -2022 batch students on 20th and 21st September between 9.45am -6pm.
Summary of day 1 (September 20th 2022): AETCOM Module 1.2 – What it means to be a patient?
The session began on 20th September 2022 with key note address by Dr Sudhir GK where he spoke about competencies related to the module and its objectives. Following this, a video on “Empathy” was shown to the students which demonstrated the different facets of a patient, relatives & health care personnel’s in the care of a patient & students reflected on the videos and expressed their views. It was moderated by Dr. Anand KSS and Dr Sudhir GK. It continued with sharing one’s experience as a patient or relative of a patient. In this context, faculty and students shared their experiences as a patient / patient relative, which was moderated by Dr Ravi GN. Following this briefing on hospital visit & interaction with patients was done by Dr. Ravi GN. Following this, students were taken to different wards in the hospital & were divided into small group of 5 each for interaction with one patient regarding history of their illness, suffering, expected care from doctors and nurses & any other problem related to their treatment.
In the afternoon students were divided into 5 small groups of 30 each under one faculty. Students were asked to give their reflection about the hospital visit and patients interaction. They were assigned to do SDL in the last session of the day with reflections writing in their log book. At the end, google form link was shared to students and collected responses and analysed it. The programme concluded with a summary by Dr. Sudhir G K.
Summary of day 2 (September 21st 2022): The doctor – patient relationship
The session started with introduction and briefing of the module 1.3 by Dr Divyashree. Following this, a video on doctor – patient relationship was shown to the students which demonstrated the professional qualities of a doctor and empathy in patient encounters. Students reflected on video and expressed their views which was moderated by Dr Ravi GN. It continued with interactive session on duties of doctor and expectation of a patient which was moderated by Dr Narasimhaswamy KN. Following this, Dr Ravi GN had given instruction on Hospital OPD visit & observing the interaction of doctor with patient. Then, students were divided into 6 groups of 25 each and taken to different OPDs in the hospital and they have observed the interaction of doctor with patients. Reflection on doctor patient interaction was then summarized by students in large group. It was moderated by Dr Sudhir GK.
In the afternoon, students performed role play on common errors in doctor – patient interaction based on different case scenarios. Few students who were there as observers had to reflect on the role plays and summarize it. Then students were assigned to do SDL in the last session of the day with reflections writing in their log book based on morning sessions. At the end, google form link was shared to students and collected responses and analysed it. The programme concluded with a summary by Dr. Sudhir G K.
