He currently serves as the Principal of Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), B.G. Dr. Shivakumar’s academic background is truly impressive. He obtained his MBBS degree from Mysore University in 1984, followed by an MD in General Medicine in 1988. His dedication to continuous learning led him to pursue further training in non-interventional cardiology at the prestigious ESCORTS Heart Institute, New Delhi — expertise that has enriched both his clinical practice and his academic contributions.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shivakumar has been a passionate educator, dedicating over 35 years to teaching medical students. He has held several esteemed positions, including Professor and Head of the Department of General Medicine at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS). His commitment to fostering excellence in medical education is further evidenced by his tenure as Chairman of the Board of Studies for PG Clinical Programs at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) from 2019 to 2022. He has served as Medical Superintendent and later as Principal at MIMS, and as Chief of Hospitals at Adichunchanagiri Hospital & Research Center, B.G. Nagara — roles in which he demonstrated exceptional administrative skill and a steady commitment to smooth institutional functioning. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to improve patient outcomes, he has been actively engaged in research, serving as Principal Investigator in several pivotal clinical trials, including studies on Sepsis-induced Coagulopathy, Convalescent Plasma Therapy for COVID patients, Aviptadil for COVID-19 treatment, and a COVID-19 vaccine candidate. His research contributions hold immense value for advancing medical treatment protocols.
Dr. Shivakumar’s dedication also extends to professional associations. As a Life Member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Association of Physicians of India (API), he actively contributes to the medical community, having served as General Secretary of the API’s Mandya Chapter. His achievements have been recognised with prestigious honours, including the Karnataka State IMA Doctors’ Day Award (2020), the Popular Teacher Award at MIMS (2018), and the Vaidya Ratna Award from the Lions Club, Mandya (2019).
