Objectives of the event

To enlighten postgraduate, undergraduate students and faculty members about the the recent advances in practical aspects of HEMATOPOETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION.

Brief Report of the Event

Dr.M G Shivaramu, Dean Health Science, Medical ACU and principal AIMS was the chief guest. Dr.Shivakumar,Chief of Hospital was the Guest of Honour.

Dr Pooja Prakash Mallya, a Consultant in Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone marrow transplantation department at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center of Narayana Hrudayalaya Health City was the guest speaker.

C.O.H Dr Shivkumar sir inaugurated the CME programme and felicitated the guest speaker Dr POOJA.P. MALLYA

Primary interest of Dr.Pooja is in Blood and Marrow transplantation in children including the newer techniques like TCR Depletion in Haploidentical transplants. She also has experience in the newer techniques like CAR T Cell therapy. She has experience in transplant for patients with many rare disorders like Mucopolysaccharidosis, Nieman Pick Disease, Immunodeficiency disorders, X linked adrenoleucodystrophy etc. She has done more then 1000 bone marrow transplant so for in children.

 Dr. Mahendrappa K B, Professor & HOD  pediatrics welcomed & introduced the guest speaker. Dr. Mahendrappa in his welcome address highlighted the importance of bone marrow transplantation for the survival of children with specific diseases like thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, immunodeficiency, storage, inborn error of metabolism, malignancy like leukemia, brain tumor, neuroblastoma etc. He also insisted on screening of these children for HLA matching and HSCT.

Speaker Dr Pooja enlightened us regarding the procedures, complications and management of hematopoetic stem cell transplantation. Dr.Pooja also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and HSCT.

The CME Programme ended with an interactive session of questions and answers put forward by the students and faculty members. Session was well attended and appreciated by the audience.  The CME  was concluded by Dr.Mahendrappa K.B.

Dr Pooja and Dr Mahendrappa  examined around 9 children with hematologic disorders and screened for HLA match free of cost

The program was useful to postgraduate and faculty in managing cases who require HEMATOPOETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION.

Outcome

The basic concept of HSCT was well explained with illustrations by Dr.Pooja. There was active interaction by the  participants.  Dr.Pooja highlighted the practical aspects of HSCT, which was a real benefit to the participants

The scientific session was very useful to students as well as the faculty. Overall it was an excellent scienctific session organized by the department of paediatrics
