The Department of Community Medicine and the NSS Unit at Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) organized a Tobacco Awareness Session at ALK High School, Bellur, on February 9th, 2024, with twin objectives of motivating students to lead tobacco-free lives and nurturing their understanding of the harmful effects of tobacco, especially among the younger populace. Dr. Shashikiran, Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, facilitated an ice-breaking session to engage students in discussions on the harmful impacts of tobacco. Dr. Vijay S Hugar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, delivered a comprehensive talk on “Tobacco Addiction in the Younger Generation,” emphasizing the increasing threat it poses to India’s youth and presenting statistics from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). Dr. Ashok N C, Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine, chaired the sessions. The program concluded with an overview of the regulations outlined in the COTPA Act. Over 70 students actively participated in the event, accompanied by medico-social workers, faculty members, and teachers from ALK High School.
As a result of the session, students demonstrated an increased understanding of the urgency of addressing tobacco addiction. They were empowered to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being. The sessions served as a valuable initiative in raising awareness and promoting positive behavior change among young individuals, aligning with the broader goal of fostering a healthier community and nation.
