The AIMS Student Support Cell and NSS organized a guest lecture titled “The Hidden Link: Snakes and Environmental Health” for 3rd-year MBBS students on May 20, 2025, in Lecture Hall 1 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at AIMS, BG Nagara.
The primary objective of the lecture was to help MBBS students understand the ecological importance of snakes, their role in controlling disease vectors, their impact on public health, and the need for their conservation in maintaining environmental balance.
The programme commenced with an invocation song, followed by the formal inauguration. The event was presided over by Dr. M.A. Shekar, Vice Chancellor of Adichunchanagiri University, and Dr. M.G. Shivaramu, Dean of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, Adichunchanagiri University. The guest speaker for the event was Mr. M.S. Balasubramanya, popularly known as Snake Shyam. He was accompanied by his son, Soorya Karthik, and his assistant, Brinda, who provided valuable support throughout the event.
Dr. Kusuma K.N., Coordinator of the Student Support Cell, welcomed the gathering, followed by addresses from Dr. M.G. Shivaramu and Dr. M.A. Shekar.
Following the inaugural session, Mr. M.S. Balasubramanya delivered a highly engaging and insightful lecture. He emphasized the crucial role of snakes in maintaining ecological balance by controlling rodent and pest populations—an important aspect of both environmental and public health. He also stressed the need to dispel myths and fears associated with snakes and highlighted their importance in biodiversity conservation.
To enrich the session, Snake Shyam presented a wide array of colorful and rare snake photographs, enabling students to appreciate the diversity and beauty of these often-misunderstood reptiles. His storytelling, grounded in years of field experience, made the session informative, inspiring, and memorable.
The lecture was attended by 250 MBBS students, who responded with overwhelming positivity. The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the attendees through its enriching content and meaningful message. It served as an inspiring and educational experience for the future medical professionals of AIMS, BG Nagara.
